Two UEA alumni have been nominated for the inaugural Galley Beggar Short Story Prize. Philippa Found is longlisted for ‘How To Be In Love With Your Best Friend’ and Gordon Collins for ‘Do Not Fall Asleep in the Bath’. They were selected from 570 submissions. Philippa (pictured) graduated from the Creative Writing (Prose) MA in 2015 and is currently completing her first collection of short stories. She previously worked as a curator and director of a London art gallery where she wrote three non-fiction books about contemporary women’s art, The Body in Women’s Art Now, Part 1: Embodied, Part 2: Flux, and Part 3: Recreation. Flux, was nominated for the Feminist and Women’s Studies Association Prize in 2011. Pieces of her short fiction have been published by Ether Books, and she was also recently highly commended for the Words and Women Prose competition. Gordon graduated from the Creative Writing (Prose) MA in 2010 and is currently works as a Learning Enhancement Tutor for Mathematics and Statistics at UEA. He holds a BSc, MSc and PhD in Mathematics and has taught maths as a lecturer at Bristol University, Computer Graphics to postgraduate students at Surrey and has been an English teacher in Japan. His short fiction has appeared in Riptide, Infinity’s Kitchen, Liars League and Unthology 3. The shortlist for the Galley Beggar Prize will be announced on 21 January. The winner will receive a cash prize of £500 or year-long editorial support from the directors of Galley Beggar Press and will be announced on 14 February.
