Five titles by four UEA alumni have been nominated for the 2014 Carnegie Medal, which is administered by CILIP (the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals) and is awarded annually to the writer of an outstanding book for children. The winner receives a golden medal and £500 worth of books to donate to a library of their choice. The five titles are ‘Mouse Bird Snake Wolf’ and ‘The Boy Who Swam With Piranhas’, both by David Almond (BA 1973) and both published by Walker Books; ‘Sea Of Whispers’ by Tim Bowler (BA 1972), which is published by OUP; ‘Infinite Sky’ by Chelsey Flood (MA 2010), which is published by Simon & Schuster; and ‘The Savages’ by Matt Whyman (MA 1992), which is published by Hot Key Books. The winning title will be announced in June 2014. Chelsey (pictured) has also been shortlisted for the James Reckitt Hull Children’s Book Award and the Leeds Book Awards in the 14-16 category.
