‘The Book of Guardians’ is the debut novel by UEA alumnus Derek Neale and is published by this month by Salt Modern Fiction. Derek (pictured) graduated from the UEA Creative Writing MA in 1993 and completed his PhD in Creative and Critical Writing in 1997. He taught for a number of years on the UEA Creative Writing programme, and is currently a Lecturer in Creative Writing at the Open University, where he helped design and write the course materials for a range of OU writing courses. He has recorded several CD interviews with playwrights, novelists, autobiographers and biographers about their approach to writing, and is the author and co-author of three practical guidebooks, all of which were published in 2009: ‘A Creative Writing Handbook: developing dramatic technique, individual style and voice’, ‘Life Writing’ (with Sara Haslam), and ‘Writing Fiction’ (with Linda Anderson).
