The River You Swim In

Leo Temple

When the winter struck, everything
And the rivers froze.
The trickles stagnated then stuck.
The rain floated, stayed rain.
The eye of the moor was glazed with ice
Leaving that which was intended
Obscenely unseen.

When the melting came, the thaw
Was like a hatching egg.
You could hear the spirit crack from solid water
Too vast for her mother, the landscape
Too fast to the sea.
Washing with it, the debris,
Of the river you swim in
