Mrs Engels, the debut novel by UEA alumnus Gavin McCrea, has been shortlisted for this year’s Desmond Elliott Prize, which is worth £10,000 to the winner. Gavin completed the MA in Creative Writing (Prose Fiction) at UEA in 2009 and gained his PhD in Creative and Critical Writing in 2013. Mrs Engels was published by Scribe in 2015 and was nominated for last year’s Guardian First Book Award. It was also recently shortlisted for the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction. Previous winners of the Desmond Elliott Prize include UEA alumni Anjali Joseph and Edward Hogan, while this longlist for this year’s Prize also included alumni Tasha Kavanagh and Tim Clare. The winner of the 2016 Desmond Elliott Prize will be announced on 22 June.
