The Five Sorrowful Mysteries Of Andy Africa by UEA student Stephen Buoro has won second prize in the 2020 Deborah Rogers Foundation Writers Award. It was selected from 876 entries for the award, which recognises and supports an as yet unpublished writer who is completing their first book. He will receive a cash prize of £1,000. Stephen (pictured) was born in Nigeria in 1993 and previously studied Mathematics before joining the UEA Creative Writing MA in 2018 as the recipient of that year’s Booker Prize Foundation Bursary. He began his novel during his MA and is currently studying for a fully-funded PhD in Creative & Critical Writing at UEA under the supervision of Andrew Cowan and Anshuman Mondal. The biennial Deborah Rogers Award was awarded UEA alumna Sharlene Teo in 2016 for Ponti and fellow alumna Deepa Anappara in 2018 for Djinn Patrol On The Purple Line. Another MA alumna Imogen Hermes Gower was shortlisted for the award in 2016 for The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock.
