The Transplantable Roots of Catharine Huws Nagashima by UEA alumna Susan K Burton has won the Rheidol Prize for Prose with a Welsh Theme or Setting in the 2020 New Welsh Writing Awards. Susan (pictured) gained a BA in History from SOAS and an MA in Pacific Rim Studies and a DPhil in History from the University of Essex. She spent 14 years in Japan, lecturing as an associate professor in Japanese universities, before graduating from the UEA MA in Biography and Creative Non-Fiction in 2014 and from the PhD in Creative & Critical Writing in 2018. She has co-authored two academic books and is a contributor to the Times Higher magazine. Her book proposal, Gaijin: Modern Japan Through Western Eyes, was shortlisted for the Biographers’ Club 2018 Tony Lothian Prize. As winner of the Rheidol Prize, Susan will receive £1,000 as and advance against e-publication by New Welsh Review under its New Welsh Rarebyte imprint.
