‘A Navigable River’ by current UEA PhD student Ben Fergusson was the winner of the 2020 Seán O’Faoláin International Short Story Prize and will be published in the latest issue of Southword: New International Writing. He received a prize of €2000 and a week-long residency at Anam Cara Retreat. Ben (pictured) is in the first year of his PhD in Creative and Critical Writing at UEA. His debut novel The Spring of Kasper Meier (2014) won the Betty Trask Prize and the HWA Debut Crown, and was shortlisted for the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award. He has since published The Other Hoffmann Sister (2017) and An Honest Man (2019). UEA alumna Judy O’Kane, who graduated from the MA in Lifewriting in 2012, will also be published in Southword, having been shortlisted for the Gregory O’Donoghue Poetry Prize.
