When We Were Birds is the first novel by UEA writer Ayanna Lloyd Banwo and is published by Hamish Hamilton this week. Ayanna is from Trinidad & Tobago and graduated from the University of the West Indies before gaining an MA in Creative Writing (Prose Fiction) from UEA in 2018, where she is now a Creative and Critical Writing PhD candidate. Her work has been published in Moko Magazine, Small Axe and PREE, among others, and shortlisted for Small Axe Literary Competition and the Wasafiri New Writing Prize. Her second novel will be published by Hamish Hamilton in 2025.
