UEA alumnus John Patrick McHugh has been awarded an Arts Council of Ireland Next Generation Award worth €25,000, one of twenty bursaries designed to support emerging Irish artists across all disciplines at an early but crucial stage in their career. John (pictured) graduated from the UEA Creative Writing (Prose Fiction) MA in 2014 as the recipient of that year’s Corsair bursary. His fiction and non-fiction have been published in Banshee, Granta, The Stinging Fly, The Tangerine and Winter Papers. His debut collection of stories, Pure Gold, was published by New Island Books in Ireland in 2021, and subsequently by 4th Estate in the UK. As part of his Arts Council award, John will also be invited to participate in a collective week-long residency at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in 2023.
