Spark by UEA alumnus Mitch Johnson has won the 2022 Mal Peet Children’s Award, which is part of the East Anglian Book Awards. The novel was published by Orion/ Hachette Children’s Group last year. Mitch graduated from the BA in English Literature with Creative Writing at UEA in 2014 and currently works as a bookseller in Waterstones, Norwich. His debut novel, Kick, was published in 2017 and endorsed by Amnesty International UK for its portrayal of children’s rights. It has been translated into numerous languages and was the winner of the 2018 Branford Boase Award. This was followed in 2021 by Pop! The overall winner of the East Anglian Book Awards will be announced on 16 February at the National Centre for Writing in Norwich.
