Dog Hearted: Essays on Our Fierce and Familiar Companions is a new collection of essays edited by UEA alumna Rowan Hisayo Buchanan and nature writer Jessica J. Lee. It has just been published by Daunt Books, and contains essays by fourteen writers, including Rowan and fellow UEA alumna Sharlene Teo. Rowan gained her PhD in Creative & Critical Writing from UEA in 2019. Her debut novel Harmless Like You was published by Sceptre in 2016 and received a Betty Trask Award. It was the winner of the Authors’ Club Best First Novel Award, shortlisted for the Books Are My Bag Readers Awards in the Breakthrough Author category and for the Desmond Elliott Prize, and was longlisted for the Jhalak Prize. In the USA it was a New York Times Editors’ Choice and an NPR 2017 Great Read. Her second novel Starling Days was published by Sceptre in 2019 and shortlisted in the Novel category of the Costa Book Awards. Rowan’s work has appeared in Granta, the Guardian and the Paris Review among other places.
