‘Sisters’ by former UEA writing fellow Mahreen Sohail has been shortlisted for the 2023 Galley Beggar Press Short Story Prize, which is worth £2,500 to the winner. Mahreen (pictured) has an MFA in Creative Writing from Sarah Lawrence College in the USA, where she studied as a Fulbright scholar. She was the Charles Pick Writing Fellow at UEA in 2014, and has also held fellowships at Yaddo and Hedgebrook. Her work has appeared in Guernica, Granta, Pushcart Prize Anthology (XLII), A Public Space, and elsewhere. UEA alumna and Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing, Naomi Wood, was longlisted for the Galley Beggar Prize for ‘Comorbidities’; recent graduate PJ Johnson was longlisted for her story ‘Clean’.
