This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things is the newest collection by UEA alumna and Associate Lecturer in Creative Writing Naomi Wood and is published by Phoenix this week. Naomi graduated from the MA in Creative Writing (Prose Fiction) in 2008 and completed her PhD in Creative and Critical Writing at UEA in 2013. Her first novel The Godless Boys was published in 2011 and she became the inaugural British Library Eccles Centre Writer-in-Residence in 2012. Her second novel Mrs Hemingway won the 2014 Jerwood Fiction Uncovered Prize, was shortlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize, and was a Richard and Judy Bookclub Choice. The Hiding Game, her most recent novel, was published in 2019 and longlisted for the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction and shortlisted for the Historical Writers’ Association Gold Crown. She won the 2023 BBC National Short Story prize for her story ‘Comorbidities”.
