‘The Sorrow and the Pity’ a story by current UEA student Ani Kayode Somtochukwu has been shortlisted for the 2024 Hope Prize, an international writing competition with the themes of hope, courage and resilience from all over the world. Simon & Schuster Australia will publish an anthology of winning and highly commended submissions. All royalties from the anthology, to be published in 2024, will be donated to Beyond Blue, an Australian mental health charity. The collection will be available in Australia and by print-on-demand internationally. Ani is a current MA Creative Writing (Prose Fiction) student and a recipient of The Miles Morland Foundation African Writers’ Scholarship. His work has appeared in literary magazines and anthologies across Africa, Europe, Asia and North America, and has been recognised by several literary award bodies including the Awele Creative Trust Prize, the Afritondo Short Story Prize, the Erbacce Prize for Poetry, ALCS Tom-Gallon Trust Award, the Toyin Falola Prize, and the James Currey Prize for African Literature. The winners of the Hope Prize will be announced on 1 July.
