Why I Am Not a Bus Driver is the debut poetry collection from UEA alumnus Ashley Hickson-Lovence and is published by Bad Betty Press this week. Ashley grew up in Hackney, London, and completed an MA in Creative Writing and Publishing at City, University of London, while working as a secondary school English teacher. He completed his PhD in Creative and Critical Writing at UEA in 2022, where he taught on the MA in Creative Writing. Ashley also teaches for First Story, Haringey Learning Partnership, and the University of Bournemouth. His debut novel The 392 was published by OWN IT! in 2019. His second novel Your Show, a fictionalized biography, was published by Faber & Faber in 2022 and was longlisted for the Gordon Burn Prize and shortlisted for the East Anglian Book Award. Most recently Wild East won the East Anglian Book Award’s Mal Peet Children’s Prize, was longlisted for the Branford Boase Award, and was a selected as a Read for Empathy collection choice.
