An ambitious new ‘state of the nation’ radio drama by UEA’s Steve Waters will launch 12th February on BBC Radio 4 / BBC Sounds.
Good People tells the story of four young idealists who fall under the spell of a charismatic, radical mentor at university. In 2020 they start to reinvent politics from the ground up, an approach they call ‘Project Hope’. But nearly a decade on Britain stands divided, and the group has splintered. They are forced to reconsider their ambitions, and ask if they were always doomed to fail. Set in East Anglia, Good People is a fictional story set against our very real political moment, examining the rise of populism, the perceived failure of politics-as-usual, and the deep divisions that run though our country and beyond.
Steve Waters is an award-winning political playwright, and also Professor of Scriptwriting at UEA. He teaches undergraduates and postgraduates at the university, and is Convenor of the MA in Scriptwriting. Students and staff in the Department heard Steve discuss the process of creating a long-form audio drama last term; a listening party followed by a Q and A with Steve will mark the broadcast of the first episode.
Good People will be broadcast weekly as part of Drama on 4 over 6 weeks from Thursday 12th February onwards. Find it on the BBC website or on the BBC Sounds app.
