Starling Days by UEA Creative Writing alumna Rowan Hisayo Buchanan has been shortlisted in the Novel category of this year’s Costa Book Awards. Rowan gained her PhD in Creative & Critical Writing from UEA earlier this year. Her debut novel Harmless Like You was published in 2016 and received a Betty Trask Award and was the winner of the Authors’ Club Best First Novel Award. It was also shortlisted for the Books Are My Bag Readers Awards in the Breakthrough Author category and for the Desmond Elliott Prize, and was longlisted for the Jhalak Prize. In the USA it was a New York Times Editors’ Choice and an NPR 2017 Great Read. Her work has appeared in Granta, the Guardian and the Paris Review among other places. The winners of the individual categories of the Costa awards will be announced on 6 January, and the overall winner of the £30,000 Costa Book of the Year Prize will be revealed on 28 January.
