Burnt Sugar, the debut novel by former UEA writing fellow Avni Doshi, has been shortlisted for the 2020 Booker Prize. Avni (pictured) was born in New Jersey and gained a BA in Art History from Barnard College in New York before completing a Masters in History of Art at University College London, after which she worked as a curator and art critic, specialising in contemporary art from South Asia. She was awarded the Tibor Jones South Asia Prize in 2013 for an early draft of Burnt Sugar, which she then worked on during her tenure as the Charles Pick Writing Fellow at UEA in 2014. Burnt Sugar was published last year in India and the United States as Girl in White Cotton and was previously longlisted for the 2019 Tata First Book Prize.
