Come Join Our Disease by UEA alumnus Sam Byers has been longlisted for the 2021 Gordon Burn Prize, which is worth £5,000 to the winner and rewards ‘literature that is forward-thinking and fearless in both ambition and execution’. It was published by Faber & Faber earlier this year. Sam graduated from the MA in Creative Writing (Prose Fiction) in 2003 and completed his PhD in Creative & Critical Writing in 2014. His first novel Idiopathy was published by 4th Estate in 2013 and won a Betty Trask Award. It was also shortlisted for the Costa First Novel Award and longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Award. Perfidious Albion was published by Faber & Faber in 2019 and was shortlisted for the Encore Award and longlisted for the Royal Society of Literature (RSL) Ondaatje Prize and the inaugural Orwell Prize for Political Fiction. The winner of the Gordon Burn Prize will be announced on 14 October.
