The Five Sorrowful Mysteries of Andy Africa by UEA alumnus Stephen Buoro has been named as a finalist for the Art Seidenbaum Award in the LA Times Book Prizes. Stephen (pictured) was born in Nigeria in 1993 and previously studied Mathematics before joining the UEA Creative Writing MA in 2018 as the recipient of that year’s Booker Prize Foundation Bursary. He is currently studying for a fully-funded PhD in Creative & Critical Writing at UEA under the supervision of Andrew Cowan and Anshuman Mondal. The Five Sorrowful Mysteries of Andy Africa won second prize in the 2020 Deborah Rogers Foundation Writers Award while still in manuscript, and earlier this year Stephen was selected as one of the Observer’s Ten Best New Novelists and a Guardian Best New Novelist. He was also shortlisted for the inaugural Nero Book Awards. The LA TImes Book Prizes award ceremony will take place on 19 April.
